When Tiger Woods first arrived on the PGA Tour, he single-handedly forced the whole playing field into a decline cycle, causing them to reassess, rethink, and change their way of playing the game. His remarkable wins drove them to improve their own skills, which led to an overall improvement in the performance of pro golfers. Eventually, everyone is forced into this difficult stage, or else we must force ourselves into it. At the height of his game, Tiger Woods forced himself into this third decline or change phase of performance. After winning several prestigious tournaments and breaking many records, Tiger decided that it was time for him to change some techniques in his game. It wasn't easy, but he succeeded. He reassessed, rethought, and faced his new challenge of becoming better. He taught his competitors and still was ready to learn more.

Top-level teams, coaches, and athletes know not to fall into the trap of comfort. They look for tougher challenges, refine and redefine training, and constantly learn from defeat and adversity. These top performers come to love the zone of discomfort. At some point, all businesspeople and athletes need to go back to the drawing board.

Coming out of phase three and starting to move upward again is the most confidence-building experience of all. Phase three rewards us with experience and a much-needed boost in self-assurance needed to compete at higher levels. Becoming better and progressing is all about going full circle, constantly cycling through all three stages of performance. This ongoing road of ups and downs applies to each of us in varying degrees every year of our lives.

Using each stage of the performance cycle to our advantage is a skill we all can learn. The first step is to acknowledge that the road to success is always under construction. Go hard in the growth stage, congratulate yourself for reaching a certain summit, take care not to plateau for too long, and then get ready to learn, to change, and to reach higher goals!
